Where AI Meets Craft
Artist and researcher Vera van der Burg explores the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, craftsmanship, and creative experimentation. Rather than viewing AI simply as a tool for efficiency or automation, she approaches it as a creative material that can challenge established ways of designing and making. Through projects such as From Text to Clay, in which AI-generated forms are translated into handmade ceramic objects, she investigates the dialogue between digital technologies and physical craftsmanship. Her work raises questions about authorship, creativity, and the evolving relationship between human skills and intelligent machines, highlighting how AI can become a partner in artistic exploration rather than a replacement for human creativity.
This talk took place during Dutch Design Week 2026 in Eindhoven, as part of the Next Gen Design Edu Talks series organized by WDCD. Next Gen Design is a three-year initiative promoting green and sustainable design within the European design sector, especially among young designers, supporting the European Green Deal. The program involves collaborations between five key design platforms and festivals: Skopje Design Week (Public Room), Mikser Festival from Belgrade (Mikser), designaustria, What Design Can Do from Amsterdam, and Barcelona Design Week (Barcelona Creativity & Design Foundation), with support from the European Commission.
