Resilience in Design
Resilience in Design is the Edu Talk by Amaia Celaya, architect, master urban planner, and master in humanitarian action, expert in resilience working with the United Nations and the European Commission. In her talk, she explored how design can integrate systemic awareness and adaptive strategies to address global challenges such as climate change and resource scarcity. Through cases like phytoremediation in Romania, indigenous roadbuilding in Yakutsk, or biohybrid lighting in Munich, it shows how local knowledge and resilience frameworks merge. The Resilience Equation highlights the interconnections between social equity, ecological regeneration, and economic viability, turning vulnerabilities into adaptive capacity.
This talk took place during Barcelona Design Week 2025 as part of the Next Gen Design Edu Talks series organized by Barcelona Creativity & Design Foundation. Next Gen Design is a three-year initiative promoting green and sustainable design within the European design sector, especially among young designers, supporting the European Green Deal. The program involves collaborations between five key design platforms and festivals: Skopje Design Week (Public Room), Mikser Festival from Belgrade (Mikser), designaustria, What Design Can Do from Amsterdam, and Barcelona Design Week (Barcelona Creativity & Design Foundation), with support from the European Commission.
