The Praise of Bastardy

Nikola Radeljkovic

Skopje Design Week 2024, Skopje

Embracing imperfection, along with the deliberate blending of diverse cultural, historical, and artistic influences, has the potential to inspire truly groundbreaking and innovative designs. This concept of ‘bastardy,’ presented and eloquently discussed by Nikola Radeljkovic, challenges conventional thinking by encouraging creators to step beyond rigid norms, fixed categories, and traditional frameworks. Instead, it celebrates the messy, chaotic, and unpredictable process of creation, unlocking unique perspectives and crafting designs that resonate deeply with authenticity and originality.

Nikola Radeljkovic was live on stage during the Skopje Design Week 2024. His lecture is featured in the Next Gen Design Edu Talks series. Next Gen Design is a three-year initiative promoting green and sustainable design within the European design sector, especially among young designers, supporting the European Green Deal. The program involves collaborations between five key design platforms and festivals: Skopje Design Week (Public Room), Mikser Festival from Belgrade (Mikser), designaustria, What Design Can Do from Amsterdam, and Barcelona Design Week (Barcelona Design Center), with support from the European Commission.
